Chiropractic Care for Pregnancy
We use a variety of gentle techniques to help women enjoy an active, healthy pregnancy
Radcliffe Chiropractic Clinic is Nottingham’s leading centre for family care as Chiropractor Naomi Mills is one of the few Chiropractors in the UK to hold a post-graduate Masters in Paediatric Musculoskeletal Health. As a fellow of the Royal College of Chiropractors paediatric faculty and member of the Association of Tongue Tie Practitioners, Naomi’s patient base is varied with pregnant women, newborns and children travelling to see her from Nottingham and beyond.
Chiropractic care in children and babies usually involves a combination of cranio-sacral therapy and extremely gentle spinal manipulation which is called "touch and hold." This involves very gentle pressure to the spine (imagine the weight of a 5 pence piece on your finger – this is the amount of pressure we use) and cranial work. We also give home advice and exercises to help you support your baby at home with their development.
More and more families are turning to Chiropractors to support their child using spine and cranial therapies. Any baby can benefit from being checked by a qualified practitioner as research evidence has shown that the pressure on the babies spine and neck during birth is significant and might affect children with straight-forward births. Of course most babies naturally recover from the stresses and strains of birth themselves, however for some this can mean weeks or even month of being unsettled, grumpy and difficult for parents to cope with! The aim of Chiropractic Care in babies is to help them recover more quickly from the strains of birth or from being restricted of space in the womb.
Babies who have had a difficult entry to the world perhaps via unplanned C-section, Ventouse or forceps delivery are more likely to show symptoms of discomfort such as crying for no clear reason, disliking being laid on their back or sleeping poorly. In clinic we often see that the first weeks of a child’s life are heavily influence by their birth: the babies we see from Nottingham Home Birth Group which we regularly attend and support, tend to have fewer of these problems compared to those who needed assistance in a hospital setting.
At Radcliffe Chiropractic Clinic, our Chiropractors use cranial techniques on children of all ages as it helps to balance and relax the nervous system, soften tight and rigid tissues and support the functioning, integration and balance of the all systems in the body. This very gentle approach means that cranial work is perfect for working with very young babies and children with great results.
Chiropractic in children is aimed at helping their body restore a state of balance so they can grow and function at their best. There is a growing body of research to support manual and cranial therapies in newborns with the most common results being that the child cries less and sleeps more! However it is important to understand that due to the ethical issues surrounding research in small babies, it is very difficult to produce the type of research trials used for medications. Indeed, many drugs prescribed to infants have also not been tested sufficiently in clinical trials.
Our Chiropractors are also very experienced in helping children from 3-17 years old with a variety of developmental, physical and postural issues. You may notice that your child has difficulties crawling or walking or keeping up with other children in the playground. This could be due to a simple physical imbalance in their muscles or spine that can be resolved with Chiropractic Care. Often these children have already been seen by their GP or paediatrician who can’t find any medical reason why they may be struggling.
You child could also benefit from seeing a Chiropractor if they have signs of hypermobility (too much movement in their joints) or you have noticed their sleep deteriorating. The majority of children sadly pick up back postural habits from their parents(!), spending time on computers and phones and by having to carry a heavy backpack. In fact research suggests that 76% of school aged children will have back or neck pain however often this is brushed off because we think they are too young!
Just like adults, children can experience back pain, neck pain, headaches and joint problems and Chiropractic Care is a great drug-free way to help resolve these problems before adulthood.
“Cranial Osteopathy” has become a buzz word for treatment needed by infants to help support optimal development, sleep and feeding among other issues. However, this is simply a term used to describe cranial release techniques applied by an Osteopath. In our clinic the same cranial techniques are delivered by our qualified Chiropractor Naomi Mills. We believe the most important thing is that your child is seen by a clinician with a specific qualification in treating children which not all Osteopaths or Chiropractors hold as this training is not routinely provided in an under graduate degree.
When we take care of babies here at Radcliffe, we begin with a detailed history of pregnancy, birth and early life before conducting a thorough examination. The wonderful thing about babies and children, is that they heal remarkably quickly so they don’t tend to require many sessions, with 3-5 on average. The exception to this is with plagiocephaly (mis-shapen head) as this can alter with a child’s growth and so requires closer monitoring.
A typical adjustment involves very gentle pressure to the spine (imagine the weight of a 5 pence piece on your finger – this is the amount of pressure we use) and cranial work. We also give home advice and exercises to help you support your baby at home with their development.
There is more and more research being done into how Chiropractic Care and cranial therapy can help a child to breastfeed. The main focus of care is to balance the muscles in the neck and jaw to help the baby achieve a deeper, more comfortable latch. We work closely with Nottingham lactation consultants and health visitors including the infant feeding cafes to give mums the best support possible. Our Chiropractor Naomi Mills is trained to assess and diagnose tongue tie and every baby who attends clinic is checked for this problem which is often over-looked.
We are proud to support local baby groups, classes and businesses in Nottingham. Here are a few you may find useful:

I came into chiropractic after receiving treatment as a child and since I love meeting new people and lots of variety, becoming a chiropractor myself seemed the perfect career choice. I have an extremely rewarding job and spend a lot of my time helping women remain comfortable and active during pregnancy and then help their […]
As a family we will continue to come back as and when we need to. This incredible lady and the work she has done with every single member of my family, and the difference she has made to us all, means I am very grateful to her and would highly recommend her to anyone.
I’d never used a chiropractor before so didn’t think about contacting one. However Naomi was recommended and I thought, why not? It surprised me that Naomi was able to find tension in his back as I didn’t know babies could have sore backs but once it was explained to me, it made sense.
I was surprised about how quickly the treatment worked. The greatest benefit is that my baby is no longer in pain because at first I didn't know that was the problem which is upsetting to think.
