Massage Therapy

What is Massage Therapy?

You don’t need to be sporty to benefit from a Sports Massage. Sports Massage is a hands-on therapy that includes different techniques involving rubbing and kneading specific muscles that are too tight and sometimes painful. While we work with several Nottingham sports groups such as Nottingham Rugby Club, running clubs and triathlete clubs many every-day people benefit too.

The reason massage is so important for all of us is because the majority of things we do in our day to day lives are bad for our posture and particularly affect these specific areas. Driving, texting, carrying, reading and looking at a computer screen are all examples of tasks that can have a negative effect on our posture. We put our bodies in these positions for hours every day and this creates stress and tension into our necks, shoulders and back. It is almost impossible to avoid any of these actions at some point during your daily routine but by trying to limit the length of time involved in the activity and by maintaining a good posture and head positioning you can help yourself immensely.

Just like any other hands-on therapy, you will only get the full long-lasting benefit of a Sports Massage after having 2 or 3 sessions. This is because it takes time to re-set the natural habits of your muscles so they become relaxed rather than tense during daily life. As the sessions go on you should then start to feel better for longer between visits and periodic maintenance visits will help keep symptoms at bay.

How can we help?

Our Sports Massage Therapists first take a full health history before assessing you to see where you most need treatment so we can determine the real cause of your tense muscles. Our treatments always involves deep tissue work to give you long-lasting results rather than a general “rub down and relax” approach which is nice, but an hour later you’ll probably feel just as you did before.

We help all kinds of people in Nottingham find relief from stress, aches and pains, daily tension, and headaches. When patients first come to the clinic massage aids in pain relief, decreases muscle tightness and spasms and increases circulation and lymphatic flow. When combined with Chiropractic Care, Sports Massage can have a different effect by optimising recovery by helping improve flexibility, break-down scar tissue, aid in relaxation and help maintain posture and mobility.

If you are serious about sport and exercise, both of our therapists are very sporty (one is a professional ice hockey player) and have a lot of knowledge and experience in both pre and post event massage to help you deliver your peak performance.

A massage is not just a “treat”

Sports Massage is a great therapy to help you live the life you want. We find that people who come for regular Sports Massage experience long-term relief from their aches and pains which can help them succeed in a big physical event or simply survive a long stressful week at work.

Pre and Post Event Massage

Fun runs, mud runs and long distance running have become more popular over the past couple of years- there’s so many now to choose from and it’s great seeing people come together and being active. Watching top athletes compete at the Olympics and in other top sporting events, inspires people to get off the sofa and try a new sport. You may be training for an ultra marathon, triathlon or even for a fun run. It doesn’t matter, if you have a goal or a time you are aiming for Pre and Post event massage can help you achieve this. Elite athletes use massage as part of their training program, so why shouldn’t you?

You may be training for something you’ve never done before, increasing your miles and pushing yourself more than you ever have, but your body isn’t liking this and your muscles are starting to feel fatigued. Listen to your body and don’t delay! Catching a tight area before it become problematic is crucial.

Massage therapy can help you train and succeed in your event because it:

  • Increases the circulation of blood to the muscles to allow them to be flushed and oxygenated
  • Helps muscles relax to the provide an increase in range of motion
  • Helps maintain the condition of the muscles throughout training
  • Improves your mental state as you feel more prepared
  • Aids injury prevention
  • Reduces muscle soreness
  • Speeds up recovery

It is best to see your massage therapist a few times before the main event to maintain the condition of your muscles so you can continue to train. This could range from weekly to monthly depending on the intensity/demands of your training. The timing of your pre and post event massage is vital: you should receive your last massage during the week before your event and post-event massage is best done the day after to help you recover very quickly.

Benefits of post event massage are that it:

  • Helps flush out any toxins/lactic acid that has been built up
  • Reduces any muscle soreness
  • Reduces swelling and to promotes healing
  • Helps the muscles return to a relaxed state
  • Helps relax and mentally recover from the event

If you have any sort of event/race/competition coming up- give massage a try and incorporate it in your training plan.We love to hear about how our clients get on and it is always a privilege to play a small role in their achievements!

I would definitely recommend getting your children checked with a paediatric trained chiropractor, and not only if they undertake sports activities. I do think that as my children are more aware of their spinal health and are involved in protecting it at a young age, they will maintain this into adulthood and not experience the issues I have.
